Anali

Responsibilities

Conducting interviews, competitive audits, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, usability studies, accessibility considerations, and design iterations.

  • Timeframe: October - November 2022

  • My role: UX designer designing Anali from conception to delivery.

User Research Summary

I conducted unmoderated usability studies and created empathy maps to understand users and their needs. Research revealed that small business owners, the primary user group, value customizability, a friendly UI, and ease of use, in addition to confirming their time constraints.

Pain points

Busy business owners often spend excessive time tracking analytics, which detracts from other aspects of their lives.

Many platforms are complex and time-consuming for users to learn.

Many other platforms lack adequate assistive technologies.

Meet the Persona

Jason, a small business owner, needs an efficient way to track business analytics so he can spend more time with his family.

User Journey Map

Mapping Jason’s goals and user journey highlighted how Anali could save him valuable time.

Paper Wireframes

I drafted multiple paper wireframes to ensure the digital wireframe would effectively address user pain points. I focused on delivering in-depth analytics and simplicity.

Digital Wireframes

In the initial design phase, I relied on research findings to guide my designs. The digital wireframe features primary navigation and charts.

Low-fidelity prototype

The low-fidelity prototype mapped the user flow for adding an expense from start to finish, making it ready for usability studies.

Usability study: findings

The usability studies revealed that users place high value on safety and encouragement.

Round 1 Findings

Round 2 Findings

Users had trouble viewing some analytics

User suggested textured pie chart.

Users wanted to see more date ranges.

Users uncomfortable sharing banking info.

User suggested milestone notifications.

Users had difficulty finding refresh button.

Before and After Usability Study 1

Early designs required users to link their bank accounts to track transactions. However, based on usability studies, I added an option to skip this step and implemented a trusted third-party service to manage banking information, ensuring user data safety.

Before and After Usability Study 2

The second usability study identified a missing accessibility feature on the pie chart, which could be challenging for users with color blindness. To address this, I added distinct textures to each pie chart segment and its key.

Mockups

Incorporating feedback from usability studies and critique sessions, I finalized the mockups for the Anali app.

High-fidelity prototype

The final high-fidelity prototype included animated transitions to simulate the complete expense-adding process and incorporated user suggestions from the second usability study.

Takeaways

While designing Anali, I discovered the value of feedback from other designers. While user feedback is always beneficial, the mock critique session provided unexpectedly valuable insights.

Accessibility Considerations

1
Color Palette

Color palette works in accordance to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

2
Pie Chart

The pie chart uses textures to differentiate categories, not just color.

3
Icons

Used icons to make navigation accessible to all.

The app’s simplicity and friendly interface make tracking business analytics both enjoyable and easy. I’d use it for personal expense tracking even without a business.
